Summertime and the livin’ is easy – but for bargain hunters, August offers a true shopper’s bounty.

From the thrifty folks at DealNews and Nerdwallet, here’s what to shop for in the dog days of August – and a few things to hold off on buying:

Shop for:
School supplies. Stock up now on filler paper, notebooks and all things school-related, because you won’t see prices this low again at any time during the year. Look for nickel, dime and quarter specials, and many stores stage a tax-free weekend to bring down the cost even more.

Outdoor goods. Everything outdoors from camp stoves to tents is on sale now, as retailers look to clear the decks for fall and winter goods. Look for the bargains you’ve been waiting for on lawnmowers, patio furniture, swim supplies, charcoal or gas grills and more.

Dorm stuff. If your kid is off to college, look for hot buys now as retailers help you send ‘em off in style with cheap linens, blankets, storage containers and more – even a new laptop.

Summer clothes. It’s all on sale, so shop this month to outfit your kids – and yourself – with next year’s summer wardrobe.

Wine. Many vineyards harvest grapes in September, and traditionally lower prices on some wines. Check with local suppliers or on eBay or for bundle buys.

Hold off on:
Major household goods. Wait for Labor Day sales on major appliances, furniture and mattresses, when the biggest discounts show up.

Small electronics. If you missed the boat on July’s sales of iPhones or Amazon electronics, you’ll probably find the next prime buying time during the week of Black Friday in November.

More to look for:

– Circle August 24th on your calendar. It’s National Waffle Day, so look for freebies and rolled back prices all over on this traditional breakfast favorite.
