Writers can have a maximum of — How to

We’re going in the right direction

My Medium Partner Program earnings are increasing. Last year when I began to publish a few articles but saw zero earnings, I gave up. But then I came back and it took me until two weeks ago to realize that writers have to attach a bank account to Medium to start earning anything.

So my first week showed 93 cents in MPP earnings. The most-recent week shows $9.09 for this account. I just began a different account on Monday, so I won’t know those earnings until next week.

In the meantime, I was happy to see numbers other than $0.00 lining the Medium Partner Program columns.

In the lead making $3.12 was an article about Medium’s daily follow limit:

Here are the engagement stats for that article:

It’s funny how I have similar views for both of the above pictured articles but the daily follow limit one made more money.

The follow limit article received more than 100 claps compared to only 46 claps for the Stripe article:

This article about my husband Theragunning my butt made $2.66:

And here are those engagements:

And there were only 14 claps for the Theragun article:

Same deal with the college-bound article below it — a piece that was actually accepted into The Ascent — but didn’t make as much money.

Yet something Simon Black taught me has been ruminating in my mind.

He figured out that he earns about $5 per hour on Medium since each story takes him about an hour to create.

By garnering 20 fans on average per story under various pen names, he makes approximately $50 per 10-hour day. If two or more of those stories are curated each week, that adds about $150.

That brings him on average $2,000 to $3,000 per month — and he’s hoping to bring in more than $30,000 on Medium this year.

I like that logic. It helps to see what it really takes some writers to bring in a living wage via Medium.

So my numbers are small but I feel like I’m just beginning and getting the hang of how Medium works.

And Zechariah 4:10 feels very appropriate right now:

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”
