“A home should feel like a personal sanctuary, that renews your energy and feeds your soul.”
Those are the words of renowned designer Mar Silver, noted for her signature style that balances minimalism with casual sophistication and has graced home design projects all over country and around the world.
“Mar loves converting antiques and reimaging them for modern life,” says longtime friend and listing agent Emily Gordon, who explains that the five-bedroom, 6,004 square-foot home at 123 Cross Highway is a true passion project. Gordon said Silver was originally renting the home and loved it so much she decided to purchase and renovate it.
With a sophisticated blend of past and present, Silver has created her own personal sanctuary by blending the property’s historical past with the ultimate in modern design. Each room is impeccably curated, utilizing the interplay of space, scale, light, architectural details, textures and custom finishes to add warmth and character.
“The essence of her art is effortless indoor/outdoor living,” says Gordon. “All of the public rooms open to the exterior gardens and extensive use of glass allows a seamless exchange with nature in any season.”
The original house was built in 1800 by one of Westport’s oldest families. Silver completely renovated the home in 2018, making sure to retain the massive original central chimney, which is now the centerpiece of the main floor’s open plan.

The clean and modern aesthetic of the living room is enhanced by character oak floors that span throughout into the dining room and kitchen. Silver took the original dining room and expanded the area to incorporate the kitchen, creating a warm, inviting space.
The 14-foot island is topped with limestone and mirrors the limestone accent wall which features a deep, portrait window with deep ledge that overlooks the patio and pool. Perfectly suited for the home chef, the kitchen is well-equipped with a full complement of top-of-the-line appliances from Bosch and SubZero, with warming drawers, refrigerator drawers, and a wine chiller. There is also a walk-in pantry.
A fully retractable door opens to the private deck creating a seamless connection to the outdoors. The tranquil, 1.35-acre setting offers an array of outdoor sanctuaries. A three-tiered deck leads to the pool and is adjacent to an outdoor pebbled dining pavilion. All are designed to soothe, rejuvenate and provide a sense of harmony.
The family room also echoes the fresh, modern look with an elongated portrait window that takes in the beauty of the natural surroundings.
The serene master suite balances dappled light and scenic views of the property with a wall of clever built-ins and loft with skylights and exposed original beams. The stunning marble bath features heated floors, marble counters, seamless shower and soaking tub. A previous staircase was re-done and repurposed into a walk-up dressing room featuring a bank of closets on either side. Three additional bedrooms, two en-suite, are found on the upper level.
The finished walk-out lower level offers a yoga room, lounge, walk-in natural stone wine cellar and changing room.
