Cozy decor ideas from an architect’s NYC home
Cozy decor ideas from an architect’s NYC home

This week’s edition of House Calls takes us to the 700-square-foot home of architect David Bench and producer Elizabeth Skadden in New York City’s Lower East Side neighborhood.

The duo, who wanted to make their home feel bigger and more functional without adding square footage, added a second bedroom, removed hallways, and expanded and renovated the kitchen. The result is a stunning, warm space where custom cherry millwork and contemporary custom furnishings take center stage.

Taking inspiration from the minimalist home, we sourced key products—or in a few cases, similar finds—from each room so you can bring the look to your own space.

Living room

In the living room, a custom steel bookshelf by David Kirshoff runs along the top of the home’s plaster walls. An Eames compact sofa sits next to a side table and lounge chairs from Noridiska Kompaniet, and the space is anchored by a zapotec rug from Oaxaca. The dining table and chairs are by Hans Wegner, and planters from The Sill sit atop a custom built cherry credenza that runs wall-to-wall below the windows.

Kitchen

The kitchen millwork is custom cherry, designed by the homeowner and built by Hachi Collections, and the countertops and backsplash are zinc. The sink is Blanco Precis in an anthracite finish, while the Aquabrass Studio fixture is brushed nickel. The kitchen flooring is composed of brass-studded rubber floor tiles.

The master bedroom is home to a custom headboard made with Edelman leather, and the side tables are custom solid cherry by Creation Therrien.
