When Buying a Condo Is a Mistake InspectHOA

Noisy neighbors are the worst! Imagine this. It’s eleven o’clock at night. You are slouching on your La-Z-Boy in your condo, enjoying Titanic with a tub of your favorite ice cream next to you. All you need is for Jack Dawson to somehow survive the cold and live happily ever after with Rose.

Right in the middle of an intense scene, you hear this:

“We Will, We Will, Rock You!

It’s your neighbor hosting a party again, which means only one thing: another sleepless night. Although your home is supposed to be a peaceful place, some loud noise coming through the walls of your condo can be enough to shatter this illusion. Even if it’s not music, it might be a vociferous argument or simply the incessant high-decibel banter of the people next door.

So, what is the best way to handle this situation and get the rest you need?

The most important thing to remember is that instead of reacting to the noise, you need to take a breath, consider your options, and choose the best way to take action. To help you master this fine art, we present you a few tips on how to deal with noisy neighbors in a condo building.

Argh! Noisy neighbors drive me crazy!

It’s easy to point a finger at someone when you are inconvenienced. However, before taking any steps to get your neighbors to bring the noise levels down, ensure that you are not over-reacting.

A condo building is a community of people from all walks of life separated by thin concrete walls. It’s impossible to avoid noise altogether. For example, if the person next-door has just delivered a baby, then hearing crying sounds at night is natural. Even if you complain about them, there isn’t much your neighbor can do. What we are hinting at is that you should make sure the noise is actually excessive before you take action. The same applies for one-off parties and once-a-month musical nights.

It’s a bit noisy you know…

Conversation is the key to solving any problem you might have with your neighbor. It may not be an easy talk to have, especially if you believe that he is a hot-head. Even if that is the case, communication should be the opening move. Here are some points to keep in mind:

  1. Don’t get distracted by other issues you may have with him, otherwise your anger will take over the course of the conversation. You are there to talk about the noise problem so stick to the topic.
  2. It’s a good idea that you discuss the issue in a neutral place like a park or a coffee shop.
  3. Give your neighbor the benefit of doubt. He might not be aware of the decibel level of the musical parties. Don’t be in a rush to accuse. Instead of telling him to turn the music down or to stop it, first ask him whether he realizes the how loud it is. This way he will stay open to a resolution.
  4. Come up with a way to solve the matter beforehand. For instance, you can ask him to turn down the volume after 11 pm.
  5. Pick the right moment. Even if you want to stop the party immediately, it is more likely to succeed after the fun and the alcohol are over.
  6. Last, but not least, avoid arguments and fights at all costs.
Ohh I need comfort…not noisy neighbors

If your neighbor parties every night, you can’t expect him to stop because the noise disturbs you. Yet again, this doesn’t mean that you should live in discomfort. The condo building community can exist only when the people in it are sensitive to each other’s needs. A healthy relationship with your neighbor is built through compromises. That’s why you should propose a solution that will allow him to host parties without leaving you sleepless.

Even if we do not recommend going this far, a last resort is filing a complaint against your noisy neighbor with the condo board or the police. Before that make sure you understand your HOA bylaws — no one can help you do that better than us! Our report is one click away.

A community is formed by all kinds of people — some noisy and some quiet, some nosy and some indifferent. It’s a buffet of human behavior. A happy community life goes hand in hand with showing respect and mindfulness. While noisy neighbors can take the peace out of your home, dealing with them in a calm and composed manner usually bears good results.

And hopefully, the next time Jack and Rose are on that ship, Jack will survive.
